How Soon Can You Have Sex After Getting Breast Implants?

May 14, 2018 | Breast

Generally, for having sex after surgery, it's best to wait about a week. This is to prevent your blood pressure from rising and increase risk of bleeding. In addition to sex, any activity that could raise your blood pressure should be avoided, such as working out or going into a hot tub.

After that time, you can begin reintroducing intercourse and at four weeks, you may safely have sexual intercourse as long as you are very careful not to do anything to displace or dislodge the breast implant.

We'll share some details below.

WHY TIMING MATTERS

Most patients ask "How long after breast augmentation can I have sex?" because it feels like one of the biggest concerns in the early recovery period. As we mentioned above, plan to wait for about a week for any intimate activities.

During this time your blood pressure can spike with arousal and sexual activity. Spikes raise the risk of bleeding and swelling around the breasts. Keeping pressure stable protects your incision site and lowers the chance of complications.

A PHASED APPROACH

  • Days 1–7: Rest and let your body start the healing process. Limit movement to a minimal level and gentle movement such as short walks. Wear your compression bra or sports bra continuously as directed. Avoid sexual intercourse and strenuous activities.
  • Two weeks: Many patients can resume sexual activity that stays below the chest area. Keep the breasts supported in a sports bra. No pressure on implants, incision site, or upper body. Stop immediately if you feel pain.
  • Weeks 3–4: You may resume sex in more positions, but continue to approach physical intimacy carefully. Avoid heavy lifting and support the breasts to prevent implant displacement.
  • After four weeks: Most patients can return to near normal sexual activity if cleared during your post op check. Be mindful that full strength and flexibility may still be returning.

Your exact breast procedure influences the specific recovery timeline.

A straightforward breast augmentation surgery often allows earlier return to sexual activity than combined breast procedures like a breast lift with augmentation. Submuscular implant placement engages the upper body more during movement. That may extend the healing time by a week or two.

Individual factors such as skin quality, breast tissue thickness, body mass, and your general health also matter. Always follow the post operative care plan your surgeon provides.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR RESULTS WHEN YOU RESUME SEX

  • Wear a supportive sports bra for the first few weeks during intimate activities. It helps reduce motion and protects the implant.
  • Choose positions that keep pressure off the chest area. Avoid direct weight, squeezing, or friction on the breasts.
  • Keep intensity at a minimal level at first. Increase slowly over the next two weeks based on comfort.
  • Stop with any sharp pain, pulling at the incision site, or visible swelling.
  • Hydrate, rest, and keep your head elevated after activity to minimize swelling.

WARNING SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR

Potential complications include bleeding, infection, and implant displacement. Early signs of complications include asymmetry, increasing pain, red streaks, fever, or drainage. Contact your surgeon if any of these occur. To avoid infection, keep dressings clean, take all prescribed medications, and follow every post op instruction. Your surgeon may prescribe antibiotics if there is concern for early infection.

Managing swelling and pain

Use cold compresses after activity if your surgeon allows. Keep the torso elevated. Wear your compression bra as recommended. Mild pain medicine from your post op plan is typically enough. If pain escalates or swelling worsens the next day, pause activity and call the office.

SENSATION CHANGES AND COMFORT WITH TOUCH

Nipple sensation can be temporarily reduced or hypersensitive during the first weeks. This is normal for many patients and often improves through the recovery period. Let your partner know what is comfortable. If sensation concerns persist beyond two weeks, bring it up at your post op visit.

WHEN CAN MY PARTNER TOUCH MY BREASTS?

Gentle, nonpressure touch around the breasts is usually safe after two weeks if cleared by your surgeon. Avoid direct pressure, kneading, or vigorous motion until after four weeks. Touch should never strain the incision site. Support with a sports bra to limit movement. If you had breast enlargement surgery combined with a breast lift, wait longer and get individualized clearance.
