How to Get Rid of Ozempic Arms

Jun 26, 2026 | Body

Loose skin on your upper arms after losing weight on Ozempic is fixable, and the right move depends on how much you have. If the looseness is mild, rebuilding muscle and protecting your skin during weight loss can make a real difference. If you are dealing with significant loose skin, an arm lift removes the excess for a smooth, toned result, and it is the only approach that reliably does. The right choice comes down to how much skin you have and what you want your arms to look like.

This is for anyone who put in the work, lost real weight on Ozempic or a similar medication, and ended up with sagging skin on the arms that diet and exercise will not tighten. The arms are one of the first places this shows up, which is frustrating when the rest of your weight loss journey is going well. Here is what causes Ozempic arms and every option for getting rid of them.

WHAT ARE OZEMPIC ARMS?

Ozempic arms refer to loose, sagging skin on the upper arms that appears after rapid weight loss. People also call it bat wings, the soft flap of skin that hangs from the back of the upper arm and moves when you do.

Ozempic was originally developed and FDA approved to control blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, and it is now widely used off label for weight loss. It mimics a hormone that slows gastric emptying and signals satiety, so you eat less and the weight comes off fast. That speed is the issue for your skin. Skin that spent years stretched over a larger body size needs time to contract. When the volume underneath disappears quickly, the skin is left with nowhere to go, and it sags.

WHY RAPID WEIGHT LOSS LEAVES LOOSE SKIN

COLLAGEN AND SKIN ELASTICITY

Collagen makes up roughly 80% of your skin’s structure, and along with elastin it gives skin the ability to snap back after stretching. Rapid weight loss damages collagen and elastin fibers, which lowers skin elasticity right when you need it most. Two other factors stack on top: age, since elasticity naturally declines over time, and how long the skin stayed stretched. The longer skin is held at a larger size, the harder it is for it to retract once the weight is gone. Genetics play a role too, which is why two people who lose the same amount can get very different results.

MUSCLE LOSS ON GLP-1S

There is a second reason Ozempic arms look the way they do, and it has nothing to do with skin. As much as 40% of the weight lost on GLP-1 medications can be lean body mass rather than body fat. Losing the muscle that once filled out your upper arm leaves it looking deflated and hollow, and that loss of volume makes loose skin look worse. Protecting muscle during weight loss is one of the most useful things you can do for the final shape of your arms.

HOW TO GET RID OF OZEMPIC ARMS

BUILD AND PRESERVE MUSCLE

Resistance training is the foundation. Working the triceps and biceps rebuilds the muscle that fills out the upper arm, which improves muscle tone and takes up some of the slack from loose skin. Pair it with adequate protein intake, which supports muscle preservation during a calorie deficit. Experts recommend resistance training specifically to maintain and rebuild muscle mass through weight loss, and starting early in your weight loss journey protects you from the gaunt appearance that fast loss can bring.

Building muscle is the best move you can make on your own, and it pays off whether or not you go further. Regular exercise also keeps your metabolism active for long-term weight management and improves the appearance and skin texture of the arms over time. On its own it will not remove significant excess skin, but it strengthens the result of every other option here and can be enough for mild cases.

DOES NON-SURGICAL SKIN TIGHTENING WORK?

It doesn’t. Non-surgical skin tightening is often recommended for loose skin after weight loss, and it is heavily marketed by medspas and related businesses, but it’s important to be honest about what it can and can’t do.

Topical creams with collagen and retinoids, energy-based treatments, microneedling that delivers RF energy, and ultrasound-based systems, are marketed as a way to tighten the arms by stimulating collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin.

However, the truth is that for arms with loose skin after weight loss, they don’t deliver. Surgical reduction is the most effective and longest-lasting option.

ARM LIFT (BRACHIOPLASTY)

When you have significant loose skin, an arm lift is the procedure that removes it. Also called brachioplasty, an arm lift is performed by a board certified plastic surgeon who removes excess skin and fat from the upper arm and tightens what remains for a smoother, more toned appearance. It is the only approach that takes excess skin away rather than improving the skin you have, which is why it remains the go-to after massive weight loss from Ozempic and similar medications.

The scars from an arm lift are placed along the inner arm where they stay hidden, and they fade over time. Recovery generally takes a few weeks before you return to normal activities, with a bit longer before strenuous activities and heavy lifting. For arms with true bat wings and skin that has lost its elasticity, an arm lift delivers the kind of change that creams and energy treatments cannot reach.

Good candidates are people who have reached a stable weight and have significant loose skin that no longer responds to exercise. When there is leftover body fat along with the excess skin, a surgeon can pair the arm lift with liposuction to refine the contour in the same procedure. Many patients also combine it with other body contouring procedures to address loose skin elsewhere after significant weight loss, since the arms are rarely the only area affected.

CAN YOU PREVENT OZEMPIC ARMS?

You cannot fully control how your skin responds, but you can stack the odds in your favor while the weight comes off. The biggest lever is muscle. Because so much of the weight lost on Ozempic can be lean body mass, lifting weights two or three times a week and eating enough protein protects the muscle that keeps your arms looking full instead of hollow. This is the single most effective thing you can do during a weight loss journey to limit loose skin later.

Pace matters too. Skin retracts better when weight is lost steadily rather than lost quickly, so working with your prescriber on a sensible rate of loss gives your skin a fairer chance to keep up. Staying hydrated and supporting collagen through diet help maintain skin elasticity as your body size changes. None of this guarantees tight arms after significant weight loss, but it reduces how much loose skin you end up with and makes any later treatment more straightforward.

WHICH OPTION IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

The amount of loose skin you have is the deciding factor. If your skin still has good elasticity and the looseness is mild, building muscle through resistance training and protecting your skin while you lose weight can improve how your arms look without surgery. If you are looking at significant excess skin that hangs and folds, non-surgical treatments will not remove it, and an arm lift is the reliable way to get rid of it.

Age, genetics, and how much weight you lost and how quickly all shape what your arms will respond to. Someone who lost a moderate amount with good skin quality has a very different path than someone after massive weight loss with deep skin laxity. A consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon is the fastest way to find out which option fits your arms, your skin, and your goals, so you spend your effort on the approach that will actually work.
